The Illusion of 3D with Illustrator CS3

The Illusion of 3D with Illustrator CS3

By Jon Measures

Running Time: 3 hours, 31 minutes

Overview

In this series of Illustrator video tutorials Jon will show you how to create 3D looking graphics. The series will deal with creating 3D graphics using the 3D effects, but there will also be demonstrations for using the Mesh Tool, the Gradient Tool and the Blend Tool. On top of this, Jon will show how you can create perspective and isometric illustrations all using Illustrator CS3. Most of what is done in this series will also work in CS2 or CS versions of Illustrator.

Detailed Video Descriptions

  1 - Extruding Objects (Running Time - 11:50)
This video is an introduction to the Extrude and Bevel feature, which is one of the three types of 3D effects that Illustrator offers.

  2 - Extruding Compound Objects (Running Time - 12:59)
This video explores the potential for combining objects as compound shapes to place multiple objects into the same perspective using Illustrators Extrude and Bevel effect.

3 - Mapping an Extruded Object (Running Time - 8:25)
Learn to apply graphics to your extruded 3D objects to really bring them to life. This opens up all kinds of illustrative opportunities.

  4 - Simple Revolve (Running Time - 7:35)
Anything that is the same all the way around, such as a lampshade or a piece of turned wood, can easily be made by using the Revolve feature in Illustrator's 3D effects.

  5 - Mapping a Revolved Object (Running Time - 11:36)
Mapping graphics onto a revolved shape offers huge potential for wrapping labels onto things like cans and bottles and much, much, more.

  6 - Invisible Geometry (Running Time - 7:12)
You can use the Invisible Geometry feature inside the 3D effects to make mapped graphics appear to float in a 3D space.

  7 - 3D type (Running Time - 10:47)
Give dimension to your typography. This video demonstrates various ways you can use Illustrator to give form to your type.

  8 - Mesh Tool Basics (Running Time - 8:38)
The Mesh Tool is great for adding subtle transitions of tone across the surface of a vector object. Here you will learn how to get started with this powerful tool.

  9 - Mesh Tool Watermelon (Running Time - 11:44)
Using the Mesh Tool and the Transform, with Top Object feature, you will learn how to create a slice of watermelon. The techniques in this video will expand your illustrative repertoire to dizzying new heights.

10 - Scaling Objects in Perspective (Running Time - 5:30)
Create interesting effects by scaling lines toward a vanishing point. The principle here can be used to create all kinds of perspective drawings.

  11 - Flat 3D (Running Time - 11:08)
Although this sounds like a contradiction in terms, flat 3D can be a very effective graphic effect. You can give form to objects by wrapping them on to 3D shapes, but then leave the shading off so that there is chiaroscuro or shading. This look has been made famous by the Japanese super flat movement spearheaded by Takashi Murakami.

  12 - Creating Form Using Gradients(Running Time - 9:30)
Gradients can be used very effectively to help describe form in the same way you would shade drawings to help show the sculptural form and solidity.

  13 - Creating Shiny Icons (Running Time - 15:17)
This technique has become a must have skill for new media designers; the look is very popular in web design. Glossy buttons, icons and logos abound, unravel the mysteries of this look's process.

14 - Making an isometric view of a package design (Running Time - 12:16)
Isometric graphics are cool and practical. A type of perspective used in engineering and video games like Simms City, this illustrative representation of form is useful for showing packages in 3D or just for making cool looking graphics.

15 - Setting up guides to create an illustration in perspective (Running Time - 20:34)
This video will teach you how to work with guides, make guides, lock guides, and hide guides, etc, to create the structure for a 2-point perspective drawing.

  16 - Giving Characters Form (Running Time - 7:16)
Here we'll utilize Illustrator's 3D effects to rotate facial features on a character around a face to see the character from a different angle.

  17 - Shading Cartoons (Running Time - 7:47)
Giving some tonal values to you vector illustrations can really make them come alive.

  18 - Atmospheric Perspective (Running Time - 10:25)
Usually when people use the term perspective, they are talking about linear or mathematical perspective. Atmospheric or aerial perspective describes the phenomenon of light being interfered with by particles in the atmosphere making color fade and lose saturation as you go back in space. Learn a technique to apply this idea to your Illustrator illustrations.

  19 - Creating Reflections (Running Time - 7:47)
This is a technique that makes it look like an object is sitting on a shiny surface. This is a simple effective technique that can be used in lots of situations once you grasp the concept.

  20 - Various 3D Techniques (Running Time - 13:12)
In this tutorial, rather than focus on a particular technique, we will look at various approaches that can be used in Illustrator to create a sense of 3 dimensions, form and depth.
